Sustainable Fashion is about taking actions to reduce negative impact on the environment as well as advocating for social justice.
We have all probably heard of the term "Sustainable Fashion" and possibly wondered what it was all about.
There is a global awareness on how fashion can be detrimental to the environment and are unfair to workers. However, that does not mean we cannot do anything about it. Here are some tips on how to make a difference, one garment at a time.
Invest in Good Quality Staples:
Buy good quality staple items that you wear regularly. Look at how often you wear it, at its versatility and how long it will last. Inspect the material, fit and wash care instructions.
Shop locally:
Aste Lokal. In supporting local brands you are advocating fair wages in exchange of unique well-made clothes. There is also less carbon emissions from importation and you are also contributing in boosting the economy and creating jobs.
Repair Your Clothes:
Try salvage your clothes as much as possible. Fix that button or change that zip. Ask a seamstress to be creative in fixing that hole on your favourite top.
Swap/Sell your unused clothes:
If there is an item you do not wear anymore, swap it with a friend or try sell it online or in shops. There are many platforms that allow you to clear your wardrobe in an ethical manner. The goal here is to avoid clothes going to the landfills.
The ultimate goal is to reduce waste, support the local economy and contributing to fair wages. One step at a time and together we can make a difference.
