Are you someone who is anxious? I mean, it’s difficult to find someone who is never anxious. We all get anxious to some extent. Moderate anxiety is healthy, it protects you. However, some people suffer more than others and there are certain subtleties to anxiety that are not quite obvious to the naked eye.
Let’s take the example of John.
John is a young man who has just started but is excelling in his corporate career. John is also someone who suffers from anxiety. But John has some amazing traits which are not generally associated with anxiety because the general stereotype of an anxious person is this very reserved, constantly sweating, panic-ridden person, and John certainly did not portray that. Let’s go over some of John's traits
Firstly, he is someone exceptionally punctual. The thing is though, this punctuality doesn’t stem from discipline or motivation; it stems from the intense fear of being judged for his lateness. John also has very strong work ethics and is very organised, but not for the reasons you think. He’s afraid of being deemed incapable in his job, and not being organised makes him feel exceedingly overwhelmed. He plans every single thing in his life, even if the likelihood of needing plan D is very bleak. John is a perfectionist and always needs to feel prepared because he cannot bear the idea of anything spontaneous.
Can you relate to John? Or do you know anyone who looks like a John?
Our friend John here is suffering from High-Functioning Anxiety; a lesser known and addressed type of anxiety because the victim seems to function normally in society, but is in fact suffering greatly inside.
It’s important to keep in mind that anxiety manifests in unconventional ways and differs from person to person.
What kind of anxiety do you have?
