Why You Need Indoor Plants in Your Life

I have recently discovered a love for indoor plants and have acquired quite a collection of them in my bedroom (half of which I’ve killed, but that’s not the point). Throughout my research into which indoor plants are the best to keep (and easiest to keep alive), I’ve realised that not only are they visually beautiful, but they also have various benefits that help to improve your mood, productivity, health and overall environment. I have also developed something of a motherly love for my plants, obsessively checking them for signs of being over-watered, under-watered and best of all, new growth (happy sigh).

First of all, plants are extremely useful to have around the house because they do the opposite of what we do when we breathe; release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. This helps to purify the air and eliminate harmful toxins.

In fact, research by NASA has revealed that houseplants can remove up to 87 per cent of toxins in the air in 24 hours. Moreover, studies have shown that indoor plants can increase concentration and productivity by 15 per cent. They

can also boost your mood and reduce stress as they regulate humidity and seeing greenery and nature can be relaxing and calming. This also makes them the perfect addition to your office space, or if you’re in lockdown right now, your workspace at home.

So, if you’re not a plant parent yet, I highly suggest you invest in one (or six, like me).

Not only are houseplants a household décor item that will never go out of style, but you will also notice that they’ll brighten your living space and make the atmosphere more calming and soothing. If you’re new to them like I am, I’d suggest you get a pothos as they are relatively easy to care for – they thrive in bright indirect light and only need to be watered once a week. Here’s a picture of mine (spot the new leaf!):

Happy plant shopping!
